New legislation proposed by the Mexican Government would decriminalize small amounts of drugs including heroin, meth, cocaine and marijuana. USA drug laws have contributed to if not directly caused a dramatic increase in murders and drug addicts especially near the US border. Evidently Mexico has had enough of the stupid USA drug laws and is moving towards a policy of treating drug use as a medical problem rather than a criminal one - of course the White House is very critical.

Looking to the U.S. as a role model for drug control is like looking to apartheid South Africa for how to deal with race

says the executive director of theĀ  Drug Policy Alliance Ethan Nadelmann. A very comprehensive article on the Mexican change in policy can be found at Alternet.
